Step Four: Assessing Digital (and Other) Information Resources
|
Indiana Online, by definition, will require access to a wide array of digital resources. It is unclear how much information about the state’s heritage and culture exists electronically or in which digital format. Equally uncertain is the breadth and depth of digital data about contemporary Indiana or the restrictions that attend its access and use. The assessment will identify and record in an Access database the content, extent, and availability of electronic data, as well as any restrictions on its use and essential information on ownership and rights. Other information to be gathered includes format and file structure, metadata, and other technical documentation. Finally, an initial judgment should be made regarding the interoperability of these data.
In addition, Indiana organizations and agencies already have published a wealth of information that may be available for an online encyclopedia (e.g., Peopling Indiana, Hoosier Faiths, etc.). An assessment will identify and record in an Access database the content, extent, and suitability of these published works, as well as information on copyright and comments on the potential for digital conversion through OCR or double-strike manual entry.
Responsibility: TPC.
Schedule: This assessment will be iterative and dynamic, beginning in September with obvious topics, and will continue throughout the planning process, focusing on the content as outlined in step four below.
Deliverable: Access database of existing digital resources.
